What are Arithmetic Missions?
The 40 Arithmetic Missions have been designed to help pupils master every arithmetic skill assessed in the Year 6 KS2 SATs through a carefully structured sequence of learning. Each Mission contains five daily resources, providing a progressive programme of practice that builds understanding, confidence and the application of arithmetic skills. Every daily resource develops learning through three carefully planned stages: Fluency, Varied Application and Intelligent Questioning. Each Mission is also supported by a step-by-step YouTube video tutorial, helping pupils secure their understanding and develop confidence.
Using the Arithmetic Tracker, teachers can quickly identify the arithmetic skills that individual pupils need to strengthen before assigning the appropriate Mission. Pupils then work through five days of carefully sequenced practice, beginning with fluency, progressing to applying the skill in different contexts, and finishing with intelligent questioning that promotes deeper mathematical thinking.
Arithmetic Missions are ideal for independent learning, intervention groups, homework or whole-class teaching. By breaking each arithmetic skill into manageable daily stages, they provide purposeful practice that develops accuracy, confidence and mathematical understanding. Through consistent, focused practice, pupils become fluent in the arithmetic skills needed for success in the Key Stage 2 SATs.
Fluency Questions
Build confidence by practising the core arithmetic skill through straightforward, carefully selected questions. Fluency Questions help pupils develop accuracy, speed and recall, ensuring they can confidently perform the fundamental calculations needed for success in the KS2 SATs.
Varied Application Questions
Apply the same arithmetic skill in a range of different contexts and question styles. Varied Application Questions encourage pupils to recognise when and how to use their mathematical knowledge, improving flexibility, problem-solving and readiness for unfamiliar SATs questions.
Intelligent Questioning
Challenge pupils to think more deeply about mathematics through carefully designed questions that promote reasoning, pattern spotting and mathematical connections. Intelligent Questioning develops conceptual understanding and encourages pupils to explain, justify and apply their arithmetic knowledge with confidence.
